BCG supports FTA’s Annual State Safety Oversight Program Workshop
We developed FTA’s SSO audit program to provide a comprehensive assessment of state and transit agency compliance with the Federal requirements via thorough onsite validation activities and to enable the development and delivery of targeted technical assistance.
BCG’s review team works with agency representatives to identify areas in which FTA can provide technical assistance, document effective practices that can be shared with sister agencies, and identify gaps in assistance that must be developed by FTA to support the Program’s goals.
For FTA, we built this tool to be used by transit bus systems around the nation to assess the status of their current safety and security programs and to direct them to resources specifically tailored to support their needs.
We work in partnership with State Departments of Transportation (DOT) to co-host FTA Transit Bus Safety and Security Program orientation seminars which are designed to support the implementation of high quality safety and security programs.
Following a series of track worker fatalities at heavy rail transit systems in the United States, FTA decided to respond by developing a variety of track worker safety training and educational initiatives. FTA asked BCG to spearhead efforts such as track inspection refresher training, safety culture brochures, and track inspection and wayside worker protection technical assistance guidelines. Additionally, FTA decided to increase the visibility and effectiveness of its assistance efforts by asking BCG to create an hour-long educational video for track inspectors, supervisors, and operations control center personnel.
Public bus transit providers needed technical assistance from the Federal Government in the areas of safety, security and emergency preparedness. The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) needed an innovative and efficient tool to provide quality assistance across the nation.

Boards should view the current crisis as an opportunity to review the way they function. A healthy self-assessment can go a long way toward improving a company’s performance.
